Nik Walenda Sarasota Wire Walk

Nik Walenda walked a high wire today without a net over State Highway 41 in Sarasota, Florida. He is fine but I am still nervous.

He walked over 450 feet across a wire suspended 180 feet above ground on Tuesday, wowing several thousand people below in his hometown of Sarasota.

Without a safety net, Wallenda was the lone figure against a blue sky, aided only by a balancing pole.

The morning was windy and Wallenda dipped down to one knee on the wire frightening the crowd.

President's Greeting

Greetings, members! 2013 is already shaping up to be an exciting year. Many of your communities have projects underway and there are signs of economic growth and new development. The APA-IL Board convened on January 11th for its first meeting of the year. Our leadership this year combines fresh faces with veteran volunteers, all of whom bring great energy to our chapter activities. This year, we are reinvigorating our Pro Bono Committee and Young Planners Group. Our Diversity Committee continues its progress after a strong start in 2012. I have found volunteering with the APA-IL to be rewarding personally and professionally. I encourage you to become involved!

2013 APA National Planning Conference * Chicago, IL * April 13-17, 2013 April will be here before you know it as the National Planning Conference returns to Chicago April 13th-17th. Our Chapter's Local Host Committee has put together a fabulous program including unique events, sessions, and fantastic mobile workshops(see below). I look forward to seeing you there. Because of the 2013 National Planning Conference, we will not have our typical fall chapter conference. Instead our 2 state sections (Chicago Metro Section and Illinois State Section) will each create events this fall to provide educational, CM, and networking opportunities for members. See the CMS & ISS reports in this newsletter for details.

If you have ideas on how to improve our chapter activities, please contact me at president@ilapa.org. We continue to grow and challenge ourselves as a board and we value the input of our members.
-- Courtney Kashima, AICP, APA-IL President

Chicago Metro Section
2013 Workshops and 1-Day Conference

The CMS 2013 Program Calendar is now available! The Chicago Metro Section (CMS) has planned 8 exciting sessions for 2013. The CMS is also offering a 2013 Workshop Registration Bundle which provides 4 admissions to planned CMS workshops for the price of 3 and can be applied to all CMS workshops except for the 1-day conference in October. This is a potential 25% savings for a series of workshops! The bundle can also be used to provide up to four people admittance to a single workshop. Visit ilapa.org for more information.

But wait! There's more!

In lieu of a State Chapter Conference in 2013, the CMS (and Illinois State Section separately) will be holding a 1-day conference in October to provide Illinois planners with professional development opportunities. The CMS One-Day Conference will include two tracts: tract 1 will focus on core planning topics presented by speakers utilizing case studies and best practices, while tract 2 will focus on technical skills to strengthen the planners’ toolbox. And fear not…there will be sessions on law and ethics. Similar to the annual state conference, attendees will have plenty of time to network, catch up with colleagues, and interact with conference sponsors. The full-day event will also include a banquet to recognize recipients of the APA-IL 2013 State Chapter Awards. Watchilapa.org for more CMS conference details! Questions? E-mail Jim Testin, AICP at jtestin@parkridge.us.

E-mail Philip Dick, AICP at Philip.Dick@mcleancountyil.gov.
